カウンターにいたもう1人の客が帰ってすぐに大将が唐突に声を掛けてきた。

香箱蟹の内子、外子で地酒をゆっくりとなんて思ったが、その旨さにかぶりつき、最後は甲羅に地酒を入れて、きれいに食べていたのを見ていたのかもしれない、全然話し掛ける雰囲気が無い大将が何の前ぶれもなく「鯖あるけど」だったので。
鱈の子付け、のどくろ、それとメニューになかった鯖の刺身を食べ比べながら、鯖が一番旨く、大将にお礼をと思い、
「鯖美味いですね」と言ったら
ニコッとしながら

この大将に塗師の方を紹介してもらったから、輪島塗のフリーカップ制作がはじまった。
「仕事？」また唐突に一言、
私「いや、仕事というか、漆器をつくりたくて、というか、以前大将に塗師の方の連絡先をきいて、それから、以前に木地をつくり、今日塗りの打合せをしてきたんですよ」
カウンターの入口近くの端の席を指して
大将「あこの席にいたよな」
やはり、覚えていてくれたらしい。何か嬉しかった。
それから、どんなカップをつくっているのか、携帯の画像を見せながら、木地はこうしてあーして、塗りはこんな感じにしたくて、それで今日、こんなことがあって、こーなったなどと、大将に話したら、作業中の手を止めて、店で使っているカップの漆器を出してくれて、これいいだろという感じでカウンターに並べはじめた。そこから漆器談義、はじめてこのお店に来た時もそうだった。
漆器の話からはじまって旅行の話まで、大将が人懐っこく話し掛けてくる間でゆったりとしていたら4時間位いたかな、大将の言葉で一番印象に残っているのは、
「儲ける商売の仕方は客が離れるが、儲かった商売の仕方は客が支えてくれる」
輪島の塗師や職人は皆なこの「儲かった商売の仕方」で、まずは技術的な話、お金の話は二の次という様子で、だから、こちらも実現したいことをどういう技術を使って、どうつくるかの話に専念しやすい、だから、打合せをしていて楽しい、実現していく実感が直に得られるから。
最後に釜飯まで食べて、気持ちよく、お腹パンパンで、真っ暗な中、月を見ながらホテルまで、カウンター越しにしか見送らない大将がわざわざ出てきてくれて、ニコニコしながら、また来年来ますと告げて帰った輪島の夜でした。
