ピクチャーウィンドウ
国立西洋美術館でル・コルビュジエ展が開催されているが、すでに2回行って、その展示の中にサヴォア邸のスロープを上って屋上庭園に出る人を撮影したビデオが流れている。
スロープは階段より広い面積を必要とするし、サヴォア邸は1階部分の外壁に沿って自動車が周回するようにもなっているので、意外と大きい住宅であり、実際に実物を見てもそう思うが、その大きさはビデオからもわかる。ただ、写真だとなぜか小さく見える、不思議だ。
そのビデオを見ていて、改めて気がついたが、実際に見ているのだが、スロープを上がりきった屋上庭園の壁にピクチャーウィンドウが設けられている。
ピクチャーウィンドウとは、外の景色を見るための窓で、窓の大きさ、窓の枠によって、外の景色が1枚の絵のように切り取られている窓のこと。意図的に見せたい景色だけを見せ、見せたくない景色は切る時につくる。
都市の中で住宅をつくる時は、結構見たくない景色が多かったりして、でも、見せたい景色も無い時などは、壁の通常より高い位置に窓を設けたりして、空しか見えないようにする。空しか見えないから、空模様が1枚の絵のように見え、光と風はよく入るし、外から室内を見られることも無く、窓が高い位置にあるから、その下は普通に壁に囲われた落ち着いた空間になる。
