機能性以外の他の何かが必要になってくる
「機能性」という言葉がある。よく使う言葉、よく考える言葉、衣食住に出てくる言葉。機能性の衣類は、例えば、機能性肌着のヒートテック、機能性表示食品は、例えば、トクホの食品であり、住における機能性は「効率性」と言い換えた方がわかりやすいかもしれない。
機能がまずあり、それに対応したプランが決まり、部屋の役割が決まる。その時にムダな動きは無いか、ムダなスペースは無いか、要するに、そこに与えられた機能を余すところ無くプランに反映しているか、効率良く機能を発揮できるプランになっているか、それができていれば「機能性が高い」となる。

衣食住がテクノロジーの成果だとしたら、機能性のように客観的な数値で表現できることは当たり前であり、それでクライアントに納得してもらうことは必要なことではあるが、テクノロジーだけで衣食住が成り立っている訳ではない。
テクノロジー偏重になり過ぎると、テクノロジーだけで、客観的な数値だけで、住を満たそうと普通にする。それに対してクライアントも何も疑問を抱かずに、それが当たり前だと思っている。
しかし、よく考えれば、自分たちの暮らしを全て客観的な数値だけで表現できる訳が無く、主観的な感情なども入り交じってくるのに、そのような主観的な感情などを受け止めるようなことは機能性の中には含まれない。ならば、機能性以外の他の何かが必要になってくるだろうに。

However, if you think carefully, there is no reason to be able to express all of your life with only objective numbers, and even if subjective feelings are mixed in, you should accept such subjective feelings.
