屈折して、屈曲して対比をつくり出す。周辺環境のコンテクストから抽出した延々と続く様に対する内部空間は、壁が屈することにより凹み窪みができ人の居場所が形成される。

風景の延々と続く様には引っ掛かりがない。その引っ掛かりのなさに違和感を感じる。その引っ掛かりのなさに非人間的な構築感がある。

人の居場所をつくることが目的だから、内部空間では延々と続く様を見せる風景、外部空間とは対照的にする。

There is no catch in the endless landscape. I feel uncomfortable with the lack of catching. There is an inhuman sense of construction in the lack of catching.

Since the purpose is to create a place for people, it contrasts with the landscape that seems to continue endlessly in the interior space and the exterior space.

延々と続く更地の風景を都市部では見かけない。そもそもそのような広い更地を見かけることがない。更地があれば何かの事業用地で、いつのまにか何かの建築で埋まる。

子供の頃の西新宿、まだ都庁どころか今の超高層ビル群が無かった頃の広い空き地が記憶にある。超高層ビルを下から見上げるのも、上に上がるのも好きな子供だった。今は当たり前の超高層建築の設計に携わると現実的な見方しかしなくなる。

人間的なスケールを逸脱している更地には、ヒューマン的な人間性は感じられず、人間のためとしつつ、より効率良くからより速く、より高くが導き出され実行される。だから非人間的だと思ったけれど、よく考えたら、より効率良くも人間の欲望の果てだとしたら、とても人間的であり、その効率の中にいるから人間であると思った。

He was a kid who liked looking up at skyscrapers from below and going up. Nowadays, when I am involved in the design of skyscrapers, which is commonplace, I have only a realistic view.

Human nature is not felt in the vacant lots that deviate from the human scale, and while doing it for human beings, more efficient, faster, and higher are derived and executed. So I thought it was inhuman, but when I thought about it, if it was the end of human desires more efficiently, I thought it was very human and I was human because I was in that efficiency.

建築することを意識して浮かび上がる周辺環境のコンテクストに影響された建築が、今度はその内部空間のコンテクストとして影響を与えることは、周辺環境のコンテクストを書き換えることになると考えた。

鉄道高架のための立ち退きでできた細長い変形地は、見渡す限り延々と続く更地の一部を形成しており、この延々と続く様は、今後風景が変わっても残り続けることので、現在から未来への時間のコンテクストとして抽出できる。

この延々と続く様を建築的に表現し、その内部空間では延々と続く様の対比が繰り広げられる。なぜ対比か、それはこの非人間的な論理で構築された風景への違和感から、抽出したコンテクストを一欠片も残したくない、ただしかし抽出したコンテクストと関連づけて時間的連続性は担保して、この内部空間が恣意的なものではないと表明したいからである。

周辺環境のコンテクストに対して少しでも能動的な対応をとるためにはどうしたらよいかと考えるきっかけは、隣地が事業用地で鋼板の目隠しで仮囲いされることになり、そのために新しく建てる建築が周りからほとんど見えなくなってしまうことだった。

建築が周りからほとんど見えなくなることは、周辺環境に埋没し存在していないことと同じであり、同時に建築側から見れば、周辺環境との断絶が起こっており、コンテクストの影響が無いことであり、受動的にコンテクストを受け入れることもできない状況である。

ただそれでも周辺環境のコンテクストは現に存在する訳だから、コンテクストに接続するための能動的な対応を考える必要がある。そうしないとその敷地にその建築が存在する必要すら無くなってしまう。

However, since the context of the surrounding environment still exists, it is necessary to consider an active response to connect to the context. Otherwise, the building wouldn't even have to exist on the site.

周辺環境のコンテクストの何に焦点を当てるのか、例えば、歴史なのか、それとも現在から未来なのか、時間軸で考えることは必要になる。コンテクストを意識しなくても、設計する時に建築を時間軸で考えるが、時間軸で何を考慮するかというと「変化」であり、建築の耐久性からくる劣化などの経年変化はもちろんだが、住宅でいえば家族構成の変化、もっと大局的に観て社会情勢の変化などがある。

周辺環境の変化は、コンテクストとして、設計する時に考慮すべき最重要事項である。変化に対応できるようにプラン上で工夫をする。それは受動的な対応であり、周辺環境のコンテクストを受け入れざるをえない建築の宿命でもある。それをもう少し能動的に対応できるようにすることはできないかと考えている。
